This upscale small group tour will take you to Madrid, the capital of Spain. Madrid offers its visitors aristocratic mansions, lavish squares, three of the world's best museums, a gigantic royal palace, a well-preserved old quarter, fantastic shopping and hundreds of tapas bars and restaurants. It is a lively city and the fun can go on all night. This tour also includes a day trip from Madrid to spectacular Toledo, a UNESCO World Heritage site, known as the Imperial City filled with mosques, synagogues, churches and museums.
Barcelona, the Capital of Catalonia, is Spain's most cosmopolitan city was once a Roman town. The old center still has one of the greatest concentrations of Gothic architecture in Europe and beyond the center a collection of bizzare and surreal buildings by Antoni Gaudi like the SagradaFamilia. We will spend four nights in Barcelona. You will have a day trip to the Penedes wine region and Montserrat mountain range.
Barcelona is one of the busiest ports in the Mediterranean. It has fantastic parks, museums and beaches. It's full of restaurants, bars and clubs that are always packed. Barcelona has so much offer and our local guide will show us the city's highlights and more.
We'll explore the cities for their amazing histories, the sites, the art, architecture, their food and wine; and to gain understanding of their fascinating and rich cultures. Join us.
Plan to arrive in Madrid in the morning or by mid-day. Private transfer from the airport to the hotel. Madrid has been the capital of Spain since the mid-16th century and it is the largest city in Spain. We'll start off with stroll late afternoon.
Tapas is central to Madrid's culinary scene. A tour of the city's tapas bars is one of the most convivial and enjoyable gourmet experiences anywhere. A Tapas tour in the evening is planned. This is a great first introduction to the local cuisine to mark the beginning of our exploration of Spanish food and wine. (Dinner)
Our local expert guide will take us to some of Madrid's highlights: the spectacular Plaza Mayor, virtually unchanged since the Hapsburg dynasty; the Prado museum to see masterpieces of Diego Velazquez and Goya; interesting markets like El Marcado San Miguel; the old quarters, the royal palace and much more.
Group lunch is planned in the residential neighborhood of Huertas where we can enjoy lunch in a quaint courtyard. We'll continue walking tour after lunch. In the afternoon, we'll stop for a snack of the local favorite: hot chocolate and churros. Free time after. As always, your tour manager is available for company. (Beakfast, Lunch)
Leisure day to do as we please. Visit other important sites like the Royal palace, the Reina Sofia or the Thyssen-Bornemisza museums. Or do some fun shopping. Your tour manager is also available to explore with the group. Tonight we can plan of having dinner at La Terraza del Casino, Chef FerranAdria's outpost in Madrid. We'll head to the liveliest and most vibrant Plaza Santa Ana after for drinks. (Breakfast)
Today our local expert guide will take us to Toledo, a World Heritage Site boasting more than 2,000 years of history and was one of the capital of the Spanish Empire. Toledo was held by the Iberians, Moors, Romans, Visigoth and Christians. Known as the "City of Three Cultures" as the Arabs, Jews and Christians have existed here in harmony for centuries. These civilizations left many diverse artistic treasures: palaces, mosques, fortresses, synagogues, A Roman bridge, and amazing works of art. Our local guide will take us through all Toledo's important sites. We'll also pop into the Gothic Cathedral and the Church of Santo Tome, home to the famous painting, The Burial of the Count of Orgaz, by El Greco.
Return to Madrid late afternoon. Note: Toledo is hilly and the streets are all cobblestones. Rubber bottom shoes are a must. (Breakfast)
Arrival in Barcelona. Private Transfer will take us to our hotel. In the afternoon, our guide will take us on a panoramic driving tour of Barcelona for to see it's important sites: boulevard, squares and various neighborhoods (Barceloneta and Eixample) and architectural gems including a few of Antoni Gaudi's Casa Mila, Casa Batllo, SagradaFamilia and ParcGuell. Explore with your tour manager for the balance of day. Group lunch is planned. (Breakfast, Lunch)
An local expert guide will conduct walking tours of Barcelona's center: BarriGotic, Las Ramblas and Gracia. A visit of the Picasso Museum is also planned. Tonight we plan on seeing a Flamenco performance. Dinner and show. (Breakfast, Dinner)
Penedes is Catalonia's premier wine region and is one of Spain's best. It is best known for excellent white wines and the sparkling Cava wine. Today, our guide will take us to Penedes wine region for the famous Cava and some red wines of the area.
We will also visit Montserrat for its monastery and the unusual and spectacular setting in the mountains. (Breakfast, Dinner)
We will go visit the Picasso museum in the morning. Remaining time at your leisure. Your tour manager can assist in planning your day. (Breakfast)
